3/22/16: An Outstanding Finish, Kratos Places 2nd as a Team in Overall State Title Chase and Two Individual Champions

What a way to cap off the season; a 2nd place finish in Division 1 out of 240 teams, two individual champions, a runner-up and two additional placewinners. Kratos finished behind Wadsworth in Div 1 team standings.

OAC State Champions:

Runner Up: Brydon Feister, D2, 75 lbs

4th Place: Chris Maloney, D2, 65 lbs

5th Place: Sammy Cartella, D4, 65 lbs

We had 5 wrestlers whom DNP but all contributed points for the team race. Winning at least one match were Ethan Hall, Brennan Williams and Avery Conroy. Marco Cartella was 2-2 in state action and Joey Ma was 3-2 with a loss in the blood round which knocked him out of medal contention.

At 65 lbs, Sam Cartella took 5th place which included a win over the OYWA League Champion, Chris Earnest, in order to fight his way into the placement rounds.

Chris Maloney was on fire. Chris made it to the semi finals but lost 0-6, and then bounced back with a win in the consi-semi finals. In a close consi-finals match, Chris lost 3-2, but left all he had on the mat.

Brydon Feister was a one-man wrecking machine with pins in each of his first 4 matches to advance into the finals. In the finals, his pinning streak came to an end but what a two-day run he had.

Big brother "Bub" Brayton Feister wrestled like a hammer as well. Actually brings a question to mind, "what do these kids eat!!" Bub pinned his way through the finals.

Finally, Jonny Slaper brought home his second OAC state championship at 110 lbs Division 3 weight class. His road to the championship included wins over several former placewinners and an OAC state champion. Jonny won the finals 6-3 against Greg Brooks.

Excellent work boys. Now take a moment to soak it in and be sure to thank your parents, coaches and God for the gifts you are fortunate to have.

3/14/16: Kratos State Championship Line-up Is Complete with Eleven Qualifiers

The final weekend of our 2015/16 season is nearly upon us. Kratos Wrestling will be well represented with eleven wrestlers whom have qualified to compete at the OAC State Wrestling Championships by placing top 4 in one of the district events held around the state. Best of luck to the follower wrestlers from our program: Avery Conroy, Ethan Hall, Brydon Feister, Chris Maloney, Brayton Feister, Joey Ma, Marco Cartella, Brennan Williams, Jonny Slaper, Brett Stanley, and Sam Cartella.

2/15/16: Three Placers at League Championships

Congratulation to Marco Cartella, Sam Cartella and Aidan McStay for placing at the League Championships. As a team, Kratos finished in 14th which was a bit lower then we had hoped, but facing adversity is an equally important skill to learn. The team now turns its attention to the OAC State Championships.

2/8/16: Kratos Rolls Onto Another Runner Up Finish

In back-to-back weekends, Kratos wrestlers brought the heat; this time at Austintown Fitch for the OYWA Districts event. Kratos qualified twelve wrestlers for the event. After the dust had settled, Kratos advanced six of these wrestlers onto the OYWA League Championships, to include five of whom captured the District crown. This is a second week in row that Kratos won all of the championship matches in which it competed and will be well positioned to place high at the league championships next week

2/1/16: OYWA Sectional Runner-ups

Kratos wrestlers demonstrated the strength of their full varsity line up this weekend by finishing second at the Mentor Sectionals and advancing twelve of the fifteen man varsity roster to Austintown Districts. The next two weeks should prove exciting to watch.

1/25/16: OYWA All Star Tournament Results

The OYWA All Star tournament provides a good mechansim to gauge the up-and-coming capabilities of the team. With eleven of the eighteen participants from Kratos medalling in this event, the future is bright. Results are as follows:

1/18/16: Six State Qualifiers From Glen Oak & Oregon Clay Districts

Kratos sent 7 wrestlers to Glen Oak Districts on Sunday to quality for the OAC State Championships. Glen Oak is one of the tougher districts from which to qualify and provides a good litmus test as we continue to prepare for the upcoming league and state championships. Qualifying for the state championships included Chris Maloney (65 lbs), Jonny Slaper (110 lbs), Joey Ma (100 lbs) and Avery Conroy (50 lbs). Chris has been on fire as of late as a result of his hard work effort in the room. He dominated the competition at districts and earned top of the podium honors. Jonny Slaper also took championship honors by defeating a previous state placer in the semi's and then another tough opponent from Brecksville in the finals. Joey Ma was a runner-up losing a tight 6-4 match in OT.

In separate district competition, Brennan Williams and Brett Stanley headed to Oregon Clay in their attempt to qualify for the state championships. We had to split our wrestlers across districts so that we wouldn't compete against each other in the same weight classes. Both wrestlers got the job done, Brennan finishing 2nd and Brett Stanley 4th at their respective weight classes. Congratulations boys.

Kratos finishes its Dual Match season with a loss to Chardon, however the opportunity to provide opportunities for kids to get varsity action whom normally don't have the chance was worth the experience. Overall, our 2016 season record concludes with a 13-4 record.

1/11/16: We'll Take It, Kratos Notches Another Win, 39-38 vs Garrettsville

Close matches are always fun to watch from a spectator perspective!!!! Garrettsville and Kratos wrestlers traded matches throughout the lineup which brought the match down to the final weight class to decide a winner. Kratos wrestler, Marco Cartella, our ace in the hole, brought the team home with a victory and lifted the final team score in Kratos' favor by 1 point. Nice Job Boys!!

1/4/16: First Dual Match Victory of 2016

Kratos downed Chagrin Falls on Sunday 27-14 in an exciting dual match. Chagrin Falls matched up all their available wrestlers for 10 matches in total. Kratos won 7 of the 10 matches. This improves the dual match record to 12-3 this season. Kratos had big wins from Avery Conroy (pin), Keaton Arabia (techfall), Jay Crosby (pin), Adam Ruffer (dec), Drake Arabia (dec, ot), Charlie Conroy (maj dec), and Jonny Slaper (pin).

1/3/16: Three Wrestlers Quality for OAC at Worthington

Several Kratos wrestlers headed to Worthington, Ohio in order to get qualification for the OAC State Championships out of the way. Kratos secured its first three qualifiers: Marco Cartella (55 lbs, D2), Sammy Cartella (70 lbs, D3) and Ethan Hall (60 lbs, D1). The remainder of our team will make a run for qualifying at the Glen Oaks and Stubenville Districts later in January.

12/21/15: Kratos Drops OYWA Dual Event, But Notches a 3rd Place Team Finish at Barberton Battle for the Belt

In another weekend full of wrestling action, Kratos finished in 3rd place for team points at the Barberton Battle for the Belt, but then lost to Lake Catholic on Sunday. At the Barberton Battle for the Belt, Kratos had over 20 wrestlers compete. "As a team, we finished 3rd overall and were only a few points out of 1st. That is a great achievement to all the boys who wrestled. Kratos had 6 Champions at this tough event and numerous placers," remarked coach Rich Slaper. On Sunday, Kratos loss to Lake Catholic by a score of 45-32. "The boys fought hard but were just outgunned by a more experienced team," added coach Mark Thompson. "We'll need to continue to put the work in to close the gaps before we see Lake Catholic at sectionals." Kratos team record now stands at 11-3

12/14/15: Mentor Black Pulls Away With A Victory

Back to Back days of wrestling took its toll, and Kratos lost a close match to Mentor Black during OYWA Action. Both teams fielded partial line-ups and had a chance to place some of their kids whom don't normally see varsity action onto the mat. "While we came up short in a few of our matches, its a great opportunity to let these kids experience varsity level competition," commented coach Rich Slaper. Winning for Team Kratos in the duals were Avery Conroy, Charlie Conroy, Anthony Zargari, and Jonny Slaper Final team score: Mentor Black 30 - Kratos 24. Team record is now 11-2.

12/13/15: Kratos Captures Team Championship at Wadsworth Duals

This Saturday, we took a team to the Wadsworth Duals. This is an elite team dual event with teams from all corners of Ohio. Kratos won several close dual matches throughout the day which made for an exciting day of action. "All of our kids were definitely tested today," commented coach Rich Slaper. "A lot of physical and mental battles played out today, but when the boys were tested, they shined." Upsetting the home team in a thriller, 56-50 was perhaps the highlight of the day. Kratos had three wrestlers who won three or more matches throughout the day; Marco Cartella, Sammy Cartella, Cooper Curtis, Aiden McStay, and Jonny Slaper. Kratos team record now improves to 11-1.

12/07/15: Another Win Advances Kratos to a 6-1 Record

Once again, depth in the line up made it possible to bring home a victory in OYWA action. This week afforded an opportunity for a number of our kids who don't normally see action on the varsity mat to step up and contribute in a big way. "Avery Conroy started off the Dual meet with a quick pin. Keaton Arabia followed up with another pin of his own. Chase Dennison lost a battle that went back and forth. Mitchell Harrison continues to improve rapidly and showed that his hard work is paying off as he added another pin to the team score. Tommy Putnam closed off the show at 150 lbs with a pin." recaps Coach Rich Slaper. Kratos improves its record to 6-1 with a win over Newberry.

11/29/15: Kratos Bounces Back with a Solid Win in Week Two Against West Geauga

"I was really proud of the kids today." stated head coach Rich Slaper. "...our entire team was really into the event! Each time I saw a Kratos kid wrestling, I could see that he was giving it his all out there. And that is all we can ask for as a staff." The varsity team had some really great wins, but no win was bigger then rookie Fisher Zappone who had a comeback victory in the 3rd period. Other winners on the varsity mat included Keaton Arabia, Conner Butterbaugh, Kyler Boyle, Owen Hall and Jonny Slaper.

11/22/15: Week 1: OYWA Competition Bring a Loss

Coming off a highlight from the week prior, Kratos suffered a loss to Mentor during week one of Ohio Youth Wrestling action. "While a couple of our young guns were absent from the lineup, the simple fact remains that Mentor bested us in head to head competition," commented coach Doug Williams. "The positional mistakes we made during today's matches were ones that we'll correct and then come back and give it a go next week."

11/15/15: Kratos Captures Overall Title at the Kratos Duals

What a great opening weekend for our Kratos boys. Kratos won the team even by going undefeated in their pool and then defeating a tough Garrettsville team in the team finals by a score of 50-39. "We have been emphasizing the need to be aggressive in all positions," commented coach Rich Slaper. "And today we did just that."

Here are the highlights

A big THANK YOU goes out to all the volunteers and teams who participated in the duals.
